[Webconference] Watercourses and climate change: what consequences?

Page mise à jour le 10/01/2025

As part of the Watercourse Resource Centre, the French Office of Biodiversity is organising a webconference on the subject of ‘Watercourses and climate change: what consequences?’ with the technical support of the International Office for Water. It will be held on Friday 10 January 2025 from 2pm to 4pm.

Climate change has become a central parameter in regional planning decisions. In fact, the effects of this change are already being felt at several levels in France and around the world: extreme weather events have become more frequent and more intense in recent years, with droughts and floods in France for example. This is why it is now essential to consider the impact of climate change on the environment, as well as its long-term consequences for biodiversity and human uses. Rivers are directly affected by these considerations: future climate conditions will have an impact on the way rivers function and on their biodiversity, and will exacerbate the effects of human use on these environments. Rivers in good condition are also seen as a solution for preparing our society to face climate risks.

What will be the future physical conditions of watercourses, their flow rates, their temperatures, their perennial or intermittent nature? What will be the consequences of climate change on populations, habitats and uses linked to aquatic environments?

This event is aimed at managers of aquatic environments, elected representatives of basin structures and GEMAPI local authorities, scientists, SAGE coordinators and government departments.

Friday 10 January 2025 from 2pm to 4pm:

  • Introduction - The Watercourse Resource Centre - Josée Peress, Watercourse Project Manager - French Office for Biodiversity
  • The results and tools available from the Explore 2 modelling project and the LIFE Eau&Climat project - Claire Magand - Office français de la biodiversité and Jean-Philippe Vidal - INRAE
  • How much pressure will there be on water resources in 2050? - Hélène Arambourou - France Stratégie
  • Alteration of the intermittence of watercourses: effects on invertebrate communities - Thibault Datry - INRAE
  • Overview of the impacts of climate change on freshwater fish - Nicolas Poulet - French Office for Biodiversity
  • The impact of climate change on Invasive Alien Species in rivers - Clara Singh - IUCN
  • Perspectives and strategies for action, as well as national frameworks - Sylvain Bart - Direction de l'Eau et de la Biodiversité, Ministère de la Transition écologique, de l'Énergie, du Climat et de la Prévention des risques (French Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Climate and Risk Prevention)
