Monitoring water resources in the Durance basin with the SMAVD's Vigie Durance Verdon interface

Page mise à jour le 02/10/2024

Following the drought of 2022, the SMAVD received a request from the drought risk anticipation body for their territory to facilitate the understanding of data and the provision of scenarios so that the body could prevent drought episodes further upstream. As part of the ‘Facilitating the mobilisation of local stakeholders’ action of the LIFE Eau&Climat project, the SMAVD has set up an interface for consulting local data on water resources.

This tool has several objectives : to monitor changes in water resources in real time, to forecast the risk of shortages and to facilitate informed decision-making. To achieve this, the SMAVD already possessed a large internal dataset. In order to supplement this information, the establishment has become a partner with industries and chambers of agriculture in the Durance region. This added to our knowledge of water consumption.

In addition, the interface shows rainwater inflows from the various tributaries and their course. The data is updated every 10 days between 10 March and 30 September. Hydro-climatic forecasts are only available at the drought instance to aid decision-making. Data on estimates of the main inflows and outflows in the Durance catchment area, as well as the levels of the reservoirs, are accessible to all.

Vigie Durance Verdon also offers a meteorological context, which can explain the hydrological data values, with snow cover, rainfall, temperatures and soil humidity. As the platform is intended to be accessible to a wide audience, educational aids can be consulted to help understand the general concepts and issues surrounding water in the Durance basin: ‘Water in rivers’, ‘Storing and distributing water’, ‘Water uses’ and ‘Managing reserves’. The interface continues to be updated regularly and the SMAVD is planning new additions, such as a glossary to make it easier to understand.
